PNG, SVG or PDF: choosing a QR code file format for print

Raster formats pixelate when scaled; vector formats redraw sharp at any size. When a 300 DPI PNG is fine, when printers demand vector, and a CMYK note.

The download menu offers PNG, SVG and PDF, and a wrong pick surfaces at the worst possible moment: after the print run. The split is raster versus vector, and once you can tell them apart the decision takes a minute.

What separates raster from vector QR codes?

A PNG stores pixels. Scale it past its native resolution and the crisp module edges blur into gray, and blurred edges are what scanners misread. An SVG or PDF stores drawing instructions, squares at coordinates, so the code redraws sharp at any size from a postage stamp to a billboard. The pattern is identical in both; the ceiling on print size differs.

When is a PNG fine for print?

When the printed code stays small relative to the file's resolution. Print wants 300 dots per inch at final size, so a 1024-pixel PNG covers a code up to about 8.7 cm wide. That handles business cards, flyers and table cards with room to spare, which makes PNG a sound default for small-format work you print yourself.

Run the arithmetic before reusing one file across formats. The PNG that looks sharp on a card turns soft on an A2 poster, and the softness costs you scans before it offends anyone's eye. Our size chart gives the minimum widths per format; pair each width with the 300 DPI check.

When do printers demand vector?

Two cases: large formats and professional print shops. Signage, banners and anything past the 300 DPI arithmetic need SVG or PDF, because vector cannot run out of resolution. Print shops ask for vector even on small jobs, since their workflow scales, recolors and imposes artwork, and a vector file survives that pipeline without resampling. When a print shop is involved, send vector and skip the back-and-forth.

PDF has one extra convenience: print shops accept it as final artwork with dimensions embedded, while SVG sometimes gets treated as a web format. Offer whichever the shop names first.

Do you need a transparent background?

A transparent PNG or SVG lets the code sit on designed artwork instead of inside a white box. Two rules keep it scannable. The area behind the pattern must stay light and even, and the quiet zone, the 4-module margin around the code, must stay clear of graphics. A code floated over a busy photo fails in any file format; transparency moves the responsibility for contrast from the file to your layout. Does CMYK matter for QR codes?

Less than print folklore suggests. Presses print in CMYK and convert RGB files on the way in. The conversion can dull a brand color, and it will not break scanning, because scanners care about one relationship: dark modules on a light background. A near-black pattern on white survives any color profile a press applies.

Trouble comes from design choices instead. Light inks, low-contrast brand pairs and inverted light-on-dark codes fail on some readers regardless of format or profile. Pick dark ink, keep the background light, and let the shop manage the profile; they do it all day.

Which format should you download today?
